Recently a client asked me a good question; how can I tell the difference between fear and my intuition.
I really feel this is a question we each need to answer for ourselves because we each experience our intuition and other feelings in our own unique ways. However, because I get this question A LOT, I thought I’d offer a few personal insights that might help you find your own answer to this question.
First, let’s define the kind of fear we are talking about here. It’s natural for all of us to feel fear. We can’t help it; fear is part of our human experience. With that said, fear originates for different reasons:
1. Instinctual fear: this is the fear that kicks into place when we’re alone at night walking to our car. It’s a good, healthy fear to have, it heightens our awareness and helps keep us safe. Once the “scaries” are over this fear subsides and then it’s gone.
2. Ego-based fear: this is the fear that tells us the story, over and over again, of what will happen or could happen if we ______________. (ex: take that leap of faith) This fear isn’t “in the moment” and often sounds like/feels like a broken record. It’s a loop that plays over and over again in our heads and very often increases in intensity as time goes by, unless we deal with it. This fear often has deep roots and could be a sign of a deeper fear or old wound.
For example: There was a time when I had a deep fear of annihilation. That’s right! I know, it sounds SO dramatic, doesn’t it? (Thank goodness it was short lived!) This fear really had me in its grips and I couldn’t shake it. The “loop” that was playing in my head had me believing that nothing good was going to happen and that I was doomed for failure! (I’m really fessing up here! Can you see how dramatic this is…I know you can relate!)
Finally, I worked with a very gifted healer to get to the root of this fear. What I discovered was this intense fear did have deep roots that could be traced back to my childhood. Once I saw and understood the “seed” of this fear I could heal it and release it! Guess what? No more fear of annihilation!
So, even though while I was experiencing this intense fear and believed it to be connected to my current life and business circumstances, it really wasn’t. Something in the present moment did trigger this fear and bring it to the surface, but in the end the fear I was feeling had nothing to do with the present moment, nor was it predicting what was to come. (In fact, once I released the fear I could see with clarity what was before me and make power-filled decisions that really served me.)
Now let’s talk intuitive guidance. When my intuition kicks into gear it gets my attention in very subtle ways. It never screams at me, rather it usually whispers. I get these “intuitive hits” in several ways. Sometimes I experience a deep “knowing” about something. Other times I hear a voice in my head. Sometimes I might have a dream that offers me guidance. Here’s the thing, the guidance NEVER overwhelms me. Even if the guidance is warning me against something it doesn’t necessarily scare me, it does cause me to increase my awareness and pay more attention.
Often my intuition speaks through my body. I have a “gut instinct or reaction” to something. My intuition will keep trying to get my attention until I take notice and I have experienced it as intense, especially if I haven’t been paying attention to the more subtle signs.
Each of us experiences fear and intuition in our own unique ways. As you read my personal examples some things might resonate because you’ve had similar experiences, but don’t think how I experience fear or intuition is how you will experience yours.
You can learn the difference between your fear and your intuition by paying close attention to how each shows up in your life. Over time you’ll increase your confidence about which is which.

Do you know your way to attracting all kinds of good fortune into your life? No, it’s really not about your marketing, although good marketing is important. It absolutely has something to do with your mindset, although that’s not the full answer either. What’s MORE powerful than marketing and mindset? Your instincts. Are your trusting yours?
It’s important that you do because your gut instincts are always giving you directions regarding your next steps. In fact, if you hit the pause button right now and got really still within yourself and asked to be guided to your next steps you would get an answer. I’m sure of it.
But sometimes I know it feels like you’re not getting nudges, answers, information or any other form of divine intelligence that shows you the way. Why does this happen and what can you do?
Here’s a look at gut instincts and tips for hearing yours.
Gut Instincts: What are they?
I think of gut instincts as your intuition and how you sense yours is unique to you. Some of us feel things, others know things. Some of you may even see or hear things. However your instincts “speak” to you is perfect for you!
The key to remember is your intuition or gut speaks to you through your body. Your intuition is something you feel inside yourself. It may come as a voice that feels like it’s whispering in your ear, or it may even be similar to a thought you’re thinking but with one distinct difference: that thought is often quick, simple and rather quiet. In other words, your intuition does not make your mind race.
I access my intuition through my body and it rises through me as a “knowing”. Other times I may hear things and know immediately it’s my gut speaking to me.
How do you access your gut instincts?
A great way is to ask questions! For example, if you’re curious about the next step you could take in your business all you have to do is ask for the next steps to be revealed to you!
Once you ask your job is to listen or feel for the answer. That means you’ve got to get quiet.
Your gut speaks to you in whispers so you’ve got to pay attention! If you’re busy running around, always doing, doing, doing, you’re going to have a hard time picking up on what your instincts are trying to tell you.
So, take a time out, get quiet within yourself and listen. You can also journal, if that helps.
Then what?
So, you asked the question and now you’re ready to hear and receive an answer. But are you?
Often times when we ask for guidance we don’t hear the message right away. I personally don’t think this is because it isn’t given, I think it’s because we’re not able to hear it or we’re not trusting what we hear.
In a perfect situation (and I know that’s a stretch) you would ask your question, get quiet and listen and receive your answer. If that actually occurs your next step would be to take action on what your gut is nudging you to do!
And that’s where it gets challenging!
Here’s why:
Your gut instincts/intuition is your direct link to divine intelligence/The Universe/God…
And because of that this information you’re receiving is always…ALWAYS…for your highest good.
But that doesn’t mean it’s going to be EASY and that is why it is so often hard for us to hear our gut instincts because we know when we hear what our gut’s been trying to tell us we’re going to have to make some changes…and that’s something many of us don’t want to do.
This works in many different ways. Here are a few examples to help you understand what I’m saying.
• You want to grow your business so you ask your intuition for your next steps and the answer is “get your food under control”. (This really happened to a good friend of mine!)
• You declare you’re ready to thrive and ask to be shown what steps support that and immediately get a nudge to hire a new coach, even though you have no idea how you’re going to afford it.
• You want to land a big account and keep asking for the way to be revealed to you and you keep hearing you need to leave your spouse.
OK, I know these are all very dramatic examples but they illustrate why it can be so hard to listen to and trust your instincts! After all, what does getting food under control have to do with growing your business?
You see, logically these answers may not make sense, but on a much deeper level they make perfect sense. But in order to see why they make so much sense you’ve got to be willing to take action on them and this is hard for a lot of us.
(BTW, my friend who got the nudge to get his food under control listened, lost 97 pounds and is now thriving in his business! Magical, don’t you think?)
The road to abundance:
Why listen to your instincts? Because they are always pointing you toward your highest good and away from things that no longer serve you. Your instincts will lead the way to more life, more abundance, more fun, more happiness.
But here’s the thing: it’s not always easy to listen to and trust your own instincts so be sure to surround yourself with people that will acknowledge your wisdom for being sound, or provide a sounding board for you to sort through the information you’re receiving.
Trusting your own instincts is the ultimate way for you to take personal responsibility for your success.

If you’re like me you’ve probably read a lot about the power of setting clear intentions. Doing so is an important step in the creation process because your intention is your opportunity to declare what you want.
Another important aspect of intention setting is how you word your intention. For example, let’s say you want to create (manifest) $10,000 each month in your business. You could write/recite your intention like this: I am so happy and grateful I am now earning $10,000 per month in my business.
I don’t know about you but that way of writing an intention has always felt a little flat to me so I got curious about it and then I had my a-ha. Creating the money is nice but what I really want to create is the experience of earning that much money, each month.
Keyword: experience.
After all, isn’t that what we’re really longing for…experiences that enrich our lives?
So I started wording my intentions in this way: I am so happy and grateful I get to experience what earning $10,000 per month feels like.
Do you see/feel the difference?
The latter takes you right into what it is you really want: the experience.
When I use the word “experience” in my intentions I instantly feel much more engaged in the creation process. I can see and feel myself having received that which I asked for.
Do you know why? Because when it comes down to it, money and things are just money and things. They are NOT experiences in and of themselves. They may play a role in an overall experience you desire, but the thing itself is not the experience.
Here’s another example.
Let’s say you’d love a bright red Ferrari. You could write your intention like this: I am so happy and grateful I am now the proud owner of a bright red Ferrari. Or, you could write this:
I am so happy and grateful that I’m experiencing what it feels like to own and drive a bright red Ferrari. I love how it takes tight corners and how fast I can go from 0 to 60!
(Because really, do you really want the Ferrari simply to own it or do you want the Ferrari to have the experience it brings while driving it?)
Can you see what a fun game this is? Let’s think of something else.
Let’s say you desire your dream house so you set an intention to manifest your dream house. You could write: I am so happy and grateful I now own and live in my dream house.
Or, you could write this: I am so happy and grateful I am now experiencing what it feels like to live in the home of my dreams.
This may simply be a case of semantics and I’m certainly not suggesting this is the best way to write an intention.
Here’s what I am suggesting: when you write your intentions get into the experience having that thing will give you. Allow yourself to feel what it would feel like. Imagine having the experience! Doing that will set the creation wheels in motion and allow you to start receiving “the way” to make it happen!

What are “extras”?
Extras are embellishments that can either support or detract from your core offer. (Program, product, service, etc.)
What extras look like:
Here’s an example: You’re putting together a new group coaching program that consists of taking clients through your step-by-step inspired w e i g h t loss program. As you’re putting your program together you think of ALL the things your clients might want from you so you start adding them. The core message of your program: allow yourself to be guided to your perfect w e i g h t loss plan. The extras you add: nutrition, exercise, calorie counting, etc.
Why we’re tempted to add them:
Sometimes we add the extras because we really see that our clients will have questions on various topics and we want to serve them.
However, and I think this is the case most of the time, we add the extras because we think we NEED to. Or that we SHOULD.
See where I’m going with this? Is it really true that you need to or should add those extras?
For a lot of us we have a hard time really believing our CORE offer is strong enough to stand on its own two feet. And this belief plays right into a deeper question: Are we really ENOUGH?
How to know if you’re carrying “extra w e i g h t” around:
Ask two great questions:
What can I do all day long with my clients and feel energized as result?
What work do I do with my clients that drain my energy?
The extras will always lead to you feeling drained because it’s not the work you really want to do, and more than likely it’s not the work you’re really meant to do.
Now, here’s the key: I know you want to serve your clients the best way you know possible so sometimes you’ll want to add some extras. Go for it! BUT, keep it in balance.
The impact extras have on your business:
The biggest impact extras will have on your business is muddying it down. Instead of clearly stating how you help your clients and offering simple solutions to their problems your offers will start feeling overly complicated.
The solutions you provide your clients should never be overly complicated. Simplicity is best for you, them, teaching your material and sharing your message.
What can you do to avoid adding too many extras?
As you’re putting together a new product or service, from time to time take a step back and see if there is anything you can whittle away from your core offer. The only way to identify the extras is to be conscious of the fact you might be adding them. Don’t be afraid of taking things out, especially when doing so could leave you with a very succinct, power-filled offer that is the exact thing your clients need and want from you!

As you’re developing your business you’re going to have a lot of ideas for new products and services. Perhaps you already have.
It’s likely that some of those offers will resonate far and wide and you’ll attract a lot of customers/clients with them. And others perhaps not so many!
Of course, there are many reasons why some offers sell and other don’t but instead of dissecting all the reasons WHY one offer does better than others I want to get straight to the heart of the matter.
The truth is every THING you create - product or service - starts in the same place…with YOU. YOU are the starting place for all your creations.
And there are many ways to start a new creation. You might get a download of inspired ideas! You might feel inspired by something you see or read. Maybe you even see something somebody else created and that leads you to create something similar. Sometimes maybe you create something because somebody requested it or told you to.
Remembering your own creation process, how did you choose what to include in each of your creations?
Why did you add this thing and that thing? Why did you choose to do it one way over another? Why did you choose to create it in the first place? And in the end, how did you ultimately feel about your creation?
What I’m getting to is this: many, many times our creations are embellished with EXTRAS. Sometimes these extras might serve to make our creations stronger and sometimes the opposite is true.
Adding “the extras” is something we each need to watch out for. It’s tempting to add “more”, but you know as well as I that more isn’t always better. In fact, I think most of us like things quite simple! We like simple solutions to our problems. Simple answers to our questions. After all, our lives are quite complicated so anything that makes life simpler is attractive!
Identifying the extras in your business will help you see what can be whittled away, leaving you with a very clear offer that is a powerful reflection of the gift you are sharing.
Next week we’ll continue this conversation with tips on how to identify the extras and how to avoid them.

Often when I’m working with new clients they are confused over what they should be doing in their business to create the results they want.
They are frustrated because there is so much they could do and they can’t clearly see what they should be focusing right now.
I’ve always believed “less is more”, in all areas of life, including business. I also believe in building a strong foundation for your business. A foundation made up of a simple marketing and product/service focus will help you to powerfully position yourself as an expert, while also allowing you to work less and make more.
To get started there are 5 choices - or decisions - you need to make regarding your foundation. Once these decisions have been made and you know they’re working for you your job is to keep adding to the strong foundation you’ve already started.
1. Choose Your Specialty: This is the work you want to become known as an expert in. What one thing are you great at that helps solve a big problem or problems for…
2. Choose Your Target Market: This is the group of people you feel called to serve. This is a group of people that have a problem or challenge your specialty can help solve.
3. Choose A Way to Share Your Gift: Now, how do you want to share your specialty, or gift with your target market? Examples could be: one-on-one services, workshops, writing a book, hosting a live event, teleclasses and boot camps.
4. Choose A Way to Share Yourself: How will you stay connected with your target market - the group you feel called to serve? Marketing is all about clear communication and connection. People buy from those they know, like and trust. What can you do to build the know, like and trust factor with your target market? Examples include: publishing a regular email newsletter, face-to-face networking, using a keep in touch marketing vehicle like Send Out Cards, or utilizing social media outlets like Facebook and Twitter.
5. Choose Three Ways You Can Add Value: OK, so once you choose your specialty now you can figure out different ways you have of adding value. Adding value is a core ingredient in attracting more and more clients to your practice. But remember the value you add has to be something YOUR CLIENT really wants and needs. You might be able to think of a lot of things you could do for them but it really only counts if they find it useful. Examples include: writing articles for your ezine you know your target market is interested in, creating add-on programs that support your client’s “next steps”, being easily accessible to answer questions they have.

As soul-inspired business owners we have a burning desire to spread our messages to those we feel most called to serve. We can feel, in our bones, how doing so would make our lives feel very on purpose and meaningful.
Many of us have dreamt of helping clients get what they want and we know we hold the key that could help many, many people do just that.
So we strike out on our own with courage and passion. We step INTO our passion and purpose to make a difference.
We also step into what is a new role for many of us and that is role of business owner. Even though we feel prepared and ready to go when it comes to helping our clients, we feel less prepared when it comes to positioning ourselves as experts, marketing our business, and making mo’ney.
The truth is in order to help a lot of people, to make the impact you want to make, you’ve got to learn how to run, position and market your business for maximum impact. This is something most of us have to learn how to do and if we’re serious about building a business that serves not only our client’s lives but also our own lives there will come a point in time when it’s time to invest in our business growth.
You know right now if this day has come for you. Here are a few of the signs: 1) you’re attracted to products and programs that will teach you what you need to learn; 2) you’re ready to make a leap in your business and realize you can’t get there on your own; 3) you realize you really don’t understand how to make mo’ney doing what you want to do; 4) you suspect a mentor could help shorten the learning curve, therefore shortening your journey to success and that is very attractive!
The good news is there are LOTS of ways you could invest in yourself. So, where are the best places to get started? Here are my three favorite ways of investing in myself and my business.
1) Choose a mentor and model her. If you find someone that does what you’d like to do watch how she does things and then model yourself after her. That doesn’t mean you should copy her. Look at it this way, if you find someone that does what you’d like to do and you know she’s doing it well and making mo’ney doing what she loves, why wouldn’t you follow her? Studying someone that is a master at her craft is a strategy you can use long term and the only thing it will cost is your time. Pay attention to how successful people do things and do them too. Read the books they read. Follow the experts they follow. Invest your time in studying them. It’s time well spent.
2) Invest money in a personal growth mentor. I’ve done this for years. I’ve worked with intuitive development teachers, taken meditation courses, listened to radio shows and podcasts, as well as read hundreds of books, all for the sake of helping me SEE myself and my gifts more clearly. Some of the programs I’ve taken have been easily affordable and others have been more of a stretch. In all cases I trust my instincts on who the right teacher is for me. I have to resonate with the teacher and their style. I adore personal growth work and learning from a gifted teacher is my favorite way to absorb myself in personal growth work. I like group formats but I also like one-on-one consultations for more private issues.
3) Invest money in a business mentor. OK, I know I said above to chose a mentor and model her. Now I will add if that mentor offers programs, products, and events spend money on them! I’m not telling you to do this blindly…only do it if it is truly a good fit for you. Here’s why: NOTHING beats learning directly from someone who’s “been there, done that”…nothing. To have the ear of a mentor who will help you strategize your next steps is absolutely priceless. It’s also amazing to have someone you admire believe in you! If following her from afar has been a good thing, learning from her directly is double the pleasure!
A few years ago I heard this wisdom: the hole you invest in yourself through is the hole you receive through. In my experience that is exactly the case. The more energy (meaning time and money) I’ve spent on building my business the more I’ve received as a result. Honestly, I’m not sure why this is the case except to say that with each investment of time and money I make the more committed I feel to making my dreams come true.
I know it’s not always easy making these investments. I’ve been there too. I’ve had to scrounge together what I’ve needed to invest in some programs. In the end, because I’ve trusted my heart, I’ve never regretted my decision.
2010 can be a breakthrough year for you but you’ve got to be willing to invest your time and maybe even your mo’ney to make it happen. Think about and implement your own personal and business development investment strategy. You and your dream are worth it!

Building Your Receiving Muscle
I recently received an article by Enoch Tan from my mentor on The Law of Circulation. Here is the first paragraph:
“The law of circulation states that all things in the universe are always flowing in circulation but at an ever expanding rate. What you give to one person, you will receive from a different source. So you don’t have to give with the expectation of receiving back from the same person you give to, but knowing that it will definitely come back to you multiplied from other sources. It works according to the law of cause and effect where the universe always mirrors back to you whatever you do.”
In other words what you give comes back to you…always. If you give love, love will come back to you. If you give money, money will find its way back to you. You can count on this. So what’s going on when you’re not feeling the love or receiving the money, or clients, or other good fortune in your life?
There’s a glitch in your receiving system.
To really “get” this you must first ask yourself if you believe in The Law of Circulation. If you have any doubt this universal law does what it says it does you’re going to have trouble accepting you should be receiving, in expanding amounts, for all that you give. Therefore, if you have doubts this is how things like love and money find their way back to you you’ll have to explore your belief system around how receiving actually works.
For now let’s say you do believe in “The Law”. Your next step is to acknowledge yourself for all that you do GIVE, every day, in the form of love, encouragement, money, friendship, etc. As you ponder this question I want you to feel your heart open and imagine what it feels like when you are giving your SELF, time and resources to the people and things you care about most. Imagine all of this yummy energy flowing out to the object of your focus.
Now, ask yourself, have you felt that same abundance of energy flowing back TO YOU? Have you felt what it feels like to RECEIVE back all this yummy energy you share with others?
If you’re having a hard time saying YES, you’re not the only one. For some reason we’re taught TO GIVE is divine but to RECEIVE is selfish. I think for so many of us we also have old, old beliefs locked inside of us that we’re really not worthy of receiving.
Here’s the thing: Receiving is something you were born knowing how to do, but as life unfolded for you all sorts of gunk got between you and your natural ability to receive.
Like what?
That answer will be different for all of us, but many times the gunk getting in the way are some life experiences you had when you were a kid that made you believe you couldn’t get what you wanted, when you wanted it. It makes sense, right? As kids we are taken care of by our parents and they determine the amount we RECEIVE. Parents tend to be RECEIVING filters for their kids. And those filters are made up of their own beliefs around receiving.
Where this gets tricky is that when we’re kids we have very real DESIRES. When our desires aren’t fulfilled because our parents (or other well-meaning adults) stopped the flow of abundance, it’s easy to see how we might have developed a belief that we CAN’T get what we want. And sometimes this develops into another abundance stopping belief, we’re not good enough.
BAM! That’s how a glitch in our receiving system starts. And this glitch is absolutely contrary to the universal truth that what we give will come back to us in ever expanding amounts!
It takes awareness and focus to heal this glitch. The first step is to acknowledge there is a glitch in your receiving system. Next you can do the following things:
1. Start practicing receiving. Whenever someone gives you anything (that doesn’t make you feel used or manipulated) receive it with a big, enthusiastic THANK YOU! A compliment, a bite of a cookie, a gift… receive it all as if it was the greatest gift you’ve ever received.
2. See all GIFTS as GOOD FORTUNE coming your way as a result of The Law of Circulation. Acknowledge this law is active and working in your life.
3. Also GIVE consciously. That means, as you give anything realize that you are setting in motion The Law of Circulation and that you can trust what you’ve just given will come back to you, again and again.
4. Recite this mantra to yourself daily: Universe, please give me many opportunities to RECEIVE. Then pay attention and SAY YES when opportunities come your way. Again, only say YES to things that don’t come with strings attached or make you feel manipulated. If someone is giving to you from the goodness of their heart, please receive it from there.
5. Talk to your small kid still inside of you that doesn’t really understand she can have anything her heart desires and remind her that even if her parents won’t let her have it, someday she can have whatever she wants. Remind her she will develop the wisdom and capacity to make her own decisions about what’s right or not right for her. Mostly remind her she deserves all the good fortune the world has to offer.
6. Imagine everything you GIVE and RECEIVE as ENERGY. Also imagine any blocks you have around receiving are energy blocks. To start receiving you need to remove the energy block, which often times is created by an old story/belief that STOPS the flow of energy coming back to you. You keep the energy flowing by saying YES and KNOWING you deserve good fortune. Stories and beliefs that are anchored in our subconscious have an energy about them that says NO to good fortune. Think about that.
7. Make it a point to become a GOOD RECEIVER. Say YES as opportunities come your way!
In 2010 set the intention you’ll start receiving all the good fortune you can possibly handle. Make a commitment to build your receiving muscle. You already have one, vow to get it back in shape!

PS. This quote from Caroline Myss sums up what we’ll be creating together in the 2010 Passion Into Profit Mastermind:
“Creativity is essential to your spiritual health. Supporting someone else’s creative ideas or efforts is the same thing as supporting her spiritual journey in this lifetime. No one can manifest her creative gifts alone; we need each other… We are sent into the lives of people who need creative support just as people are sent into our lives. Sometimes all we need to do is provide invisible psychological support. “You can do it” or “Hang in there” can be a source of renewed faith. — Caroline Myss

Here’s why I ask. I’ve coached and mentored many solopreneurs over the years and I started to notice something, the solopreneurs whose businesses took off like wildfire got very in touch with the essence of their business in three key areas: 1) who they are, 2) who their customers are, and 3) what they’re really selling behind their snazzy titles and packaging.
Essence is the thing behind the thing. It’s the core energy that is always present but not always easy to describe. You can see and feel essence but not in obvious ways. Essence is that special something people notice and want to be around! It’s what will make your business RESONATE.
When you think about it, you can get just about anything you want from several different sources. Why do you choose what you choose? Pay attention the next time you buy something that adds value to your life and/or business in some way. Why are you really buying what you’re buying? Are you buying because of price, packaging or something less tangible, yet more powerful?
As a solopreneur it’s important to get in touch with the essence of your business (the deeper soul purpose of it) so you can infuse it into the products and services you create. When you do, you create a truly unique, conscious business.
A conscious business is a business others can connect to on a deeper level because it has that “special thing”…a special energy about it. Instead of feeling flat, it feels alive. Instead of being “in your face”, it feels welcoming and authentic. Instead of turning you off, it inspires.
A conscious business attracts like-minded and like-energy loyal, raving fans because they can clearly see and feel Who You Really Are.
How do you infuse your business with essence (your soul-inspired purpose)?
One thing: you get very clear on what makes you YOU. You dig deep. You get to know yourself inside and out. You get to the heart of what makes you unlike any other.
When you have this kind of profound clarity you can infuse your business with something that is truly unique, perhaps even remarkable, and in no way duplicatable.
